Starting to draw
May 16th 2008
I’ll be honest with you all…
When I was younger, I used to draw a lot (even though that my drawing skills were quite poor). It became even worst when I stopped drawing at all some years ago.
As a student at Animation Mentor I did some planning using stick figures but I’ve noticed that I was not feeling comfortable even drawing that. And let me share a secret with you… That’s BAD.
I’ve been always amazed by some students that even drawing a few lines are able to communicate a lot. It took me a long time (probably too much), but I’ve decided that it’s time to get back to my sketchbooks and pencils and start drawing again.
To draw a little bit each day cannot hurt. What’s the worst thing that could happen? Who knows! Maybe I improve my skills!
For those of you looking for some inspiration, let me post something that Glenn Vilppu said:
We want to be able to communicate our feelings visually, and to recognize what creates those feelings in the observer. In short, the ability to focus our emotions and intellect to express visually what is important to us.
Being honest, as animators, we want to do the same thing while posing our character!
I don’t want to get into the discussion about if a CG animators needs to know how to draw but I think that drawing is a good way to sharp our observation skills.
